I started this site mainly as a forum for musicians and fans of progressive art rock, classic rock, guitar music, classical music, obscure foreign films, etc. --Everything for the artsy creative crowd this is just plain bored with mainstream American culture and hackneyed ideas.
I seek to "go beyond existing stagnant music forms"(Steve Hackett's original newspaper ad that attracted Genesis); what I mean by this is present day mass market music. Also I want to avoid the Mc Donald's-ization of our culture (e.g., propaganda by Fox News, American Idol, Fear Factor, etc.), other stupid television shows, homogenization of the American mind, etc.

I suppose this might mean delving into the past "Golden Ages" a lot, but also looking forward to the future. Tonight I listened to Julian Bream's Renaissance lute album Woods So Wild, and, you know, I think that was a higher quality entertainment than going out to see the latest Hollywood blockbuster full of chronically fake-looking special effects and trite plots.
What I seek in my aesthetic journey is elegance, taste, truth, something real but "tasteful". I wouldn't consider myself a dandy, just someone refined and classy, yet knowing money does not give a person culture.

Of course the main focus of the Weekend Guru Esoteric Music BBS is progressive art rock, yet there are myriad roads one takes after being inspired by groups like the Moody Blues, Yes, Genesis, Led Zeppelin, and these can also be expanded and added to the site.

My travels and sojourns include most of Western Europe, Costa Rica, Istanbul, Prague, Poland, Spain(Andalucia and Barcelona), Andorra. My perspective on life after more than a decade abroad was forever altered. One thing I've learned is sometimes the dream is more important than the reality, and wherever you go, there you are.
I wrote a book about Americans travelling in Europe in the 1990's. Click here for some sample chapters.
While abroad, I continued often in sort of a 60's and 70's time warp and returning to America was a rude shock.
In any case, I hope this can be an interesting forum and will grow as time goes by.

My writing:
Coming back from Europe inspired me to write a novel about home....
The Loners (2006) is a bildungsroman, a coming-of-age novel set in early-80's Southern California. Growing up in a privileged and sequestered suburb, four outsiders form a friendship through the trials of their last year of high school.
